Ulduar - Day 1!
April 26th, 2009It was a warm Summer Thursday Night and 9 Intrepid Heroes of Kung Foo Monkey Badgers eagerly awaited fellow Badger Vindi’s downloading of patch 3.1.1. Suspense mounted as he counted down the percentages download over Teamspeak. Meanwhile, the teams appointed Raid Leader for the evening was frantically reading tactics to pretend he had at least a minimal amount of knowledge of Ulduar, our chosen place of Battle for the upcoming hours. His attempt to pull the wool over his teams eyes was very quickly thwarted as questions were asked and answered with merely - “I don’t know”. Gear checks made, Vehicles appointed.
Our Healers, Peregrinum and Auldyn were to be Greasy Bikers for the evening, Top Dps Duo Joneleth and Lemmon took charge of a Seige Vehicle while “The Tanking Duo” of TheHoff and Elfmantim took to the other. Hunter partnered Warrior as Pekkala drove her Demolisher straddled by Horacio, with the last vehicle, a second Demolisher, being conducted by the Rogue partnership of MaryClaire and Migget.
The team took time to drive around the starting area and befriend their new weapons of destruction then, lead by Timmy, headed in to the Gauntlet. What started off as quite a daunting run of 6 badly driven machines vs. a gazillion mobs, Robots, Gyrocopters and Giants turned out to be the fastest transition from Noobery to Imbaness that has ever been witnessed. Wave after wave of mobs were despatched of swiftly and their homes destroyed. We soon found ourselves face to face with Flame Leviathan surrounded by mobs, we took the mobs down and started on the big wheelbarrow himself, promptly followed by his Guardians of Nature. It didn’t take us long to realise we hadn’t destroyed any….er all of the towers and had actually started a Hard Mode encounter of the Boss. Still never to be defeated we gave it our best shot and got him down to 90%
The vote was made that perhaps Hard Mode instancing was for lesser guilds and as a traditional, old school guild, we should do it the normal way so destruction of towers began, led by Horacio’s instructions and Elfmantim’s directions, whilst the Raid Leader was still struggling to even figure out what day it was. We promptly returned to face “Wheelbarrow Boss” once more. Now skilled veterans of our new vehicles confidence was high!
Tactics were set and in we went. It didnt take long for the tactics to be tossed out of the window and a “ring-a-ring-a-roses” type affair to ensue but even as panic set in, a wipe with him at 50% was a moral victory!
Attempt 3 was where the fun really started , the forgotten art of “Gnome Tossing” was about to be reborn. Migget and Horacio sat in the Catapults grasp, as they awaited their fate. The Raid Leader counted down to “toss-time” and soon we would be underway, the shout of “GO!” forced Lemmon’s foot to the floor as he speed towards the Boss, his partner in crime frantically firing as he went. Above them the gnomes flew, Horacio performing a triple somersault with pike made the perfect landing as he saw his Gnomish friends chin hit the floor beneath him. Silence fell for a moment as we mourned Miggets passing, the laughter soon followed with not so much as an “ooops, sorry” from MaryClaire - Never trust a Rogue I always say. The battle continued as Horacio destroyed 1 part of the turret then, in typical Badger style, died on the easy bit of jumping off of it
The following few attempts all bore similar stories of failed landings, dismounts, Lack of tar on the floor, being too close, being too far, running out of Gnomes, the usual problems one encounters when learning a new boss, but learning we were. Each attempt drew us closer and closer to glory.
Finally, we were victorious…… A change of roll for TheHoff and Auldyn, had TheHoff taking Auldyn’s Helmet whilst Auldyn took charge of TheHoff’s Cannon. Instantly the change could be seen as a success Peregrinum and TheHoff were born to ride! Tar was hitting the floor in all the right places and they were dodging, weaving, speeding, overtaking - All the things the previous rider wasn’t capable of and Auldyn was partnering his Druish Brother Timmy as if they were separated at birth. The beautiful partnership of Joneleth and Lemmon in their mechanical monster continued to destroy the DPS Meters, whilst both Pekkala, MaryClaire got direct hits with their Gnomish buddies and were chipping away nicely at the turrets. Every 30 seconds Flame Leviathan would change his mind over who he wanted most, Pekkala, Lemmon, Pekkala, MaryClaire and they all reacted perfectly to the change. As the Boss swapped, Peregrinum would fly past dropping tar, which would swiftly be ignited by a single shot from Joneleth and Lemmon’s Seige Vehicle. The boss slowed and ignited, TheHoff would then add insult to injury by perfectly placing a second Tar pool and that being just as quickly ignited. We only really began to lose people with about 20% left on the boss, we knew the opportunity may escape us another time so we took our chance and every pulled together to give that last big push, driving perfectly to force the boss into the flames and closer to the monsterous DPS provided by our Seige Vehicles……
A Massive cheer erupted as he crashed to the floor, we had all worked so hard it truely was a great feeling. Congratulations to Peregrinum who picked up Firesoul and to Joneleth who went home with Might of the Leviathan and lets hope we see much more of that in the near future. Badgers just put their foot through the door of Ulduar, and they do intend to be coming out the other side one day

It wasn’t the most visually pleasing or best choreographed of fights, with lots of running around with a debuff trying to avoid hurting one another and the “quick, leg it!” moments with invulnerable lightning balls on your tail, but we made it look good and it made us feel good when we downed the most annoying of elementals.
My head hung as I headed towards the exit, after such a great run from the start, why did I now feel so down. We HAD been successful, we had got that far, but it wasn’t enough for me. I wanted glory! Luckily though, this was a Badger Run and Hiela and Kraks brought a glimmer of hope back - “Can we find another tank?”. It was nearly Midnight and the boss had left, I thought it was all over and thought everyone felt the same.
Schoolboy Error shouldve used it ages ago, I’m dead. Terra continued to solo him and an extremely good job he did too. Sadly at 2% health, Loken finished him off.
